Monday: Child of God
With all the noise in the world, do you hear the voice of God? Your calendar tells you what to do, but do you remember who you are? Being comes before doing. This is a call to put first things first. Return to the Lord with this daily pattern of prayer and devotion. Set aside this time as a sanctuary. Find a space free of distraction and follow this pattern.
Invocation
Make the sign of the cross, and say,
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Invitation Prayer
If you have an advent wreath, light all four candles and pray:
Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. The light no darkness can overcome.
O Love Incarnate, draw near to me this hour and throughout the day. Teach me to love as you love - fully, sacrificially, and with great joy. Amen.
Word: Luke 1:28
"The angel came to her (Mary) and said, “You are honored very much. You are a favored woman. The Lord is with you. You are chosen from among many women."
Meditation
I remember interviewing for jobs after college and getting those small letters informing me that I didn’t receive the position. The funny thing was that for some of the positions, after the interview I knew the job would be a bad fit in one way or another and I had already made up my mind to decline the position if it was offered. But that didn’t make it sting any less when I found out they didn’t want me either.
You are chosen. Everyone loves hearing those words. It means we have value and worth in someone else’s eyes. And if they think so, perhaps it’s true. Conversely, hearing that you are not chosen can be devastating. Whether it’s for a job or a college or a sports team, to hear that you haven’t been selected feels like an indictment on who we are as a person. On our character and value.
In Baptism, your Heavenly Father says to you, “You are chosen. You are loved. You have value and worth. So much that I have given my Son for you, that you might live with me forever. You are my beloved child.” You are chosen.
Prayer for Life as a Child of God
· For the Father to give me care and guidance.
· For forgiveness when I wander and want my own way.
· For the Father to keep me childlike in faith even as I age.
· For growth in faith, that I love and trust in God above all things.
· For strength to obey God.
· For the Father to heal my hurts.
· For assurance when I doubt.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank you for choosing me as your beloved child. When I am lonely or feel forgotten, help me to remember who I am to you. I love you Father. Amen.
