Saturday: The Church
With all the noise in the world, do you hear the voice of God? Your calendar tells you what to do, but do you remember who you are? Being comes before doing. This is a call to put first things first. Return to the Lord with this daily pattern of prayer and devotion. Set aside this time as a sanctuary. Find a space free of distraction and follow this pattern.
Invocation
Make the sign of the cross, and say,
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Invitation Prayer
If you have an advent wreath, light the first two candles and pray:
Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. The light no darkness can overcome.
Jesus, you are the Prince of Peace. Teach us to make peace with our words, with our hands, for our own place and all places. Amen.
Word: Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Meditation
You’ve heard the rally cry, “No justice, no peace.” There is truth to this. Shalom means that all is right and whole, as it should be. Justice is when things are done rightly, as God intends. So when there is justice, peace occurs.
The Bible ties justice and peace together all the time. In Romans 5:1, justification is the precursor for peace with God. “Therefore” - because Christ has done justly, because he has made us right before God by his sacrifice, peace is the new state of affairs. We are no longer enemies and rebels to God. We are at peace.
Praise God today for his goodness. Thank him for achieving peace in your relationship with him. Extend the peace he gave to you by being a peacemaker with others.
Prayer for the Church
· For my local congregation, my brothers and sisters in Christ.
· For Christians across my community and city.
· For my denomination or church body.
· For repentance where God’s people have failed or erred.
· For the mission of God given to his people, that all nations know Him.
· For the church where she is persecuted for Christ’s name.
· For church plants and mission frontiers.
· For workers in the harvest: pastors, teachers, evangelists, servants.
· For the everyday, ordinary Christian to serve and witness as the priesthood of all believers.
· For the small, overlooked, and undervalued parts of the body of Christ.
Closing Prayer
O God, we have peace with you through our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you. I love you. I praise you. Like electricity, let that peace flow through me to others. I want them to know your peace too. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
