It Is Finished (Week 1): THURSDAY
With all the noise in the world, do you hear the voice of God? Your calendar tells you what to do, but do you remember who you are? Being comes before doing. This is a call to put first things first. Return to the Lord with this daily pattern of prayer and devotion. Set aside this time as a sanctuary. Find a space free of distraction and follow this pattern.
Invocation
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Invitation Prayer
Lord Jesus, we are your disciples and we follow you. That means we trace your footsteps even to the cross. You are Friend of sinners. You are Savior of the lost. Reform our hearts in the shape of your will. Release us from guilt and shame. Restore us to new life in your image. Lord, have mercy on us. Amen.
Confession
O God, in the beginning you made us good, even “very good.” I admit the many things in my life that are far from your good intent. I try to change, and then find myself in the same place once again. Lord, you know me. Have mercy. Make me right. Forgive my wickedness. Bring me back to good, as you intended from the beginning. Amen.
Word
“Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins.” (Ps. 25:18)
Meditation
We tend to hide our afflictions and troubles. We try to conceal our sins. We don’t want others to know our warts, scars, or secrets. Can you imagine if the world could see your browsing history on your phone or computer? Can you imagine if your worst thoughts were published for others to view?
The words of the Psalm are different. They are an invitation for God to see it all. “Consider my situation,” we plead. “Look at my troubles, even those brought about by my own failing.” But the Psalm doesn’t stop here. It asks God to forgive all of the ugliness that he sees. This is a bold request. We dare to ask it, only because we know God’s heart to be merciful. We ask for forgiveness because we’ve heard Jesus forgive from the cross. With his words ringing in our ears, we are confident to ask, “Lord, forgive me too.”
Today, consider a secret sin that no one else knows. Something you’ve done or thought in your mind. Something shameful. Then take it and toss it at the foot of the cross. Pray:
Lord, I want to hide, but I can’t hide from you. Take away my secret sins. Forgive me. Grant me healing and peace. Amen.
Sending
You are loved by God. Your end is not dust. He has given you life! Go from this place to a life of service and witness. Go in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
