Seven Ways to Simplify the Season

12/8/2014

I don't have a "silent night" in December.  Beginning tonight, I've got commitments for 10 straight evenings.  How did such a holy celebration become the noisiest and busiest time of year?

While we spend our treasure online and at the mall, "Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Luke 2:19).  What did that look like?  How does God want us to honor Christ in a season that's become more disruptive than contemplative?   Some simple practices that might help:

  • Go for a walk at night.  Yes, be the creepy person walking the cold sidewalks in the dark.  The cool air, a light breeze, hearing your own breath - a pause to give you new perspective.
  • Observe childrens' delight at simple things.  You used to be in awe of decorating a tree or stringing lights.  Now it's a chore.  Go back in time by following a child through the simple traditions of the season.  If you don't have kids or grandchildren, borrow some (with parents' permission).
  • Institute an electronic free day.  One day.  No e-mail.  No social media.  No TV.  No radio.  Only essential phone activity.  Can you do it?????!!!!!
  • Read Luke chapters 1-2 slowly over the course of 30 minutes.  Really slowly.  And when you finish, do it again.  Slowly.  And then take note of details you've missed or forgotten about.  Then read it again.  Slowly.
  • Go to church.  I'm a pastor, and I barely ever say this.  But think about it.  Every destination in your life has a practical purpose - school, work, store, gym, mechanic, doctor/dentist, cinema . . . Christian worship is not another chore, duty, or "to-do" on your list.  Worship is actually impractical.  In a sanctuary of time and space, you don't have to do anything.  Just receive gifts from God.  I know, it's so counter-cultural.
  • Read three news headlines and pray specifically for them.  Syria, a local homicide, Ferguson, drought, Afghanistan, political tension, celebrity drama . . .  Pray, "Come quickly, Lord Jesus."
  • Write a hand-written letter to three people.  With e-mail, text, and social media, ink and paper are such a big deal.  And snail mail says, "I spent 49 cents on you!  I really care!"  With your sloppy handwriting, tell three people you love them and they matter immensely to you.

It's why I cherish the Advent evening services - it's a quiet respite focusing on what's important.
