To Those in Power

Dear Presidents and Governors, Princes and Rulers,

This is what we have seen:

Politics as profit.  Pride.  Power. 
To win is to vanquish a foe.
Impose.
Destroy.
Gut.

But we believe that true governing is different than politics.
We believe that you occupy an office that is not your own. 
We believe you are governed by a greater Administration.
 
We are students in the school of inverted power.
Jesus Christ is our Teacher in this backwards way.
 
Strength is for service, not status.
 
Power is for the weak, not for winning.
 
Muscle is flexed for the powerless. 
 
The orphan.
The religious minority.
The single mother.
The widow.
The unborn.
The poor.
The refugee.
The losing party.
The marginalized.
 
With power comes authority.
With authority comes responsibility.
With responsibility comes sacrifice. 
 
Leadership places you under others, not over them.
Leaders suffer for their followers.

Thus the King of the Universe became a slave.
Thus the crucifix.
Thus our Lord.
Thus our inverted view of power. 
 
To those in office, your posture will buckle under the weight.  We pray for you as you bear the burden that accompanies power.
